Preparing a solution for a specific quantitative analysis requires a precise measure of its volume to ensure a precise concentration as well. The volumetric pipette (Figure 1), which comes with capacities from 1 to 100 mL, offers a precise measurement of the solution volume.
The following are the steps for using the volumetric pipette.
- Clean and dry the pipette, especially the tip, to avoid contamination of the test solution.
- Attach the pipette filler on top of the pipette to safely draw the solution into the pipette.
- Fill until the solution reaches the calibrated mark. Place your eyes level with the mark and read the lower level of the meniscus.
- Dispense the solution into a carrying vessel. Do not attempt to blow the remaining liquid in the tip to avoid false measurements.
